Mr. Reed and Mrs. Warwick are delighted to introduce Abby Mein (Ms. Mein) as our new student teacher in the Oakesdale History classes for the first quarter of the school year. Abby’s journey has been quite diverse. Born in Wyoming, she spent part of her childhood in Germany before moving to Washington, where she graduated high school in Auburn. Her family later relocated to Minnesota, and just a few months ago, they returned to Washington, settling in Aberdeen. For the past four years, Abby has been pursuing her studies at Washington State University in Pullman. Go Cougs! Abby is thrilled to be placed at Oakesdale for her student teaching, as she has always aspired to teach at a rural school. After completing her degree, she plans to seek a teaching position in a rural area, with Montana being her top choice. During her time at Oakesdale, Abby will be collaborating with Mr. Reed in his 8th grade Social Studies and 11/12th grade US History classes, and with Mrs. Warwick in her 6/7 Early American History class. This summer, Abby joined Mr. Reed and Mrs. Warwick for a week-long intensive professional development seminar, where they explored the national civics program “We the People.” This experience allowed Abby to further develop her skills and enthusiasm for teaching, and Mr. Reed and Mrs. Warwick are excited to see her apply this growing expertise in our classrooms. Abby shares her excitement, stating, “I am very excited to teach at Oakesdale for my internship. I hope to bring fun and educational lessons to the classroom.” Please join us in welcoming Abby Mein to our Oakesdale community! #NighthawkProud

The Spokane National Guard invited all college and high school educators to experience an exhilarating helicopter flight over the Spokane area. All that was required was that the participants learn about the opportunities available in the Guard. An approximately 30 minute flight out of Felts Field on a Chinook Helicopter was enjoyed by about 60 Spokane area educators. Oakesdale’s Mr. Reed and Oakesdale’s great friend, LaCrosse’s Miss Titus (who also wrote this) enjoyed the ride. #NighthawkProud

Hey Everyone, Here we are in August, so it is time to start thinking about school. Here are some pieces of information for you. 1. If you are not returning to Oakesdale and are receiving these alerts via email, text, and/or the app; your information will be removed from our system once records are requested and entered at your new school. In the mean time, there are "opt out" methods on the email and text deliveries. If you don't want app alerts, delete the app or turn alerts off on your app. 2. Registration and school photos will take place on Thursday, August 15th, from 9-4. Anne Hockett will be taking school photos that day. **Side note-while it seems like in this day and age of technology we would have a program, such as Qmlitiv, that would make online registration a simple process that makes life easier for you and us here at the school. Qmlitiv is far from that program, yet is the program assigned to the school for student data management. That all being said, there is NOT an online registration option. Forms will have to be completed by hand. It is what it is. 3. The school supply list is included in this post (the 5th grade list got cut off a bit...it also has water bottle, snacks to share, and an pencil box/bag). There is not a list for high school as students know what they need for their classes by that point. Honestly, they know in middle school too, but there is a generic list. 4. Open House dinner will start at 5:30pm on Tuesday, August 27th in the cafeteria. Quick introductions will be at 6pm then everyone will head to classrooms. All teachers of all grades will be here and provide information you may want. Everything will wrap up no later than 7:30. Remember, bring school supplies so you can get everything put away. 5. The first day of school is Wednesday, August 28th and it WILL be a late start day. School will start at 9am. 6. The school year calendar is posted on the website in the NEWS section. 7. There are already MANY events in the school calendar for athletics, etc. Take a look and put them on your calendar. That is all for now. Enjoy August. #NighthawkProud

While it may be hard to believe, over the summer teachers often go back to school. This summer, Mr. Reed, Mrs. Warwick, and 2024-25 History student teacher Miss Abigail Mein (WSU), spent a week in Spokane with other history, civics, and social studies teachers from Washington and Idaho immersing themselves in a civics program called, “We the People.” “We the People” is a civic education curriculum funded with a grant from Georgetown University in Washington D.C. The curriculum teaches about the history and principles of the United States constitution to students in elementary, middle, and high school. The program's goal is to help students develop the skills they need to be effective citizens by enhancing their understanding of American constitutional democracy and the relevance of the Constitution andBill of Rights.  The training was an intensive 5-day event that culminated in the three teachers competing in a mock hearing before judges in Congress. They plan to bring their new curriculum back to Oakesdale Middle School and High School and have the students use the knowledge that they gain to compete in competitions as well. #NighthawkProud

Bring a camping/lawn chair (we do have some bleacher seating, too) and join us on the football field as we celebrate the Class of 2024. The ceremony starts at 11am. We will have a shuttle available to drive those who need assistance onto the field, just wait on the bench by the cafeteria doors. It will be a great day! Congrats to the Oakesdale High School Class of 2024! #NighthawkProud

Senior spotlight: Will Lanius Hi Will! You are our last senior spotlight of the school year! Better get to it before the year passes us by: First off, when you’re not senior-ing, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? Farming, whether it’s real life or farming simulator. Sounds about right. If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be? The River. Excellent choice! Looking back, do you have a favorite HS memory? Basketball bus rides, listening to music and singing our lungs out. Sounds like a ball…get it? You are Big Will amongst our younger students. Any advice for them? Don’t be like me and be good in school. It’s not worth being a pain in the rump. If only students could figure that out early on. That’s good advice! What’s your plan following graduation? I plan to farm with my Uncle Josh until I can’t farm anymore. What do you love about farming? Don’t have to be around people but I do get to be around my family. Sounds legit. Graduation time is upon us! Best of luck, Will, in all your future endeavors!

Senior spotlight: Tristen Burd Hi Tristen! Let’s get right into it… First off, when you’re not senior-ing, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? I like to play video games, practice martial arts and spend time with family. Ohh Cobra Kai! What is your favorite form of martial arts? Wrestling That’s a good one! You are one of our amazing Skills Center students! What is your favorite part of collision repair? Probably fixing something that has been broken. Ah yes, very satisfying. What is one fun fact our audience might not know about you? I don’t know…I’m pretty honest about myself. Ok then, what’s your spirit animal? A Bear, any bear. Why bear? We’ve got a lot of similarities: big, strong, and sleep for half the day. Hibernation is key. Looking back, do you have a favorite HS memory? At the Skills Center, I had a pile of filler dust in my hands and was pretending to put it on my friends back. They turned around and knocked it right into my face. I had to rinse it all off, not what you want on your face. What advice do you have for our younger students? Get your volunteering done early in your high school career. That is VERY good advice! What’s your plan following graduation? To go into the workforce. Probably something in autobody since I have the experience from the Skills Center. If not, I will become a bouncer. The wrestling will come in handy for that. Thanks, Tristen! Have a great rest of your senior year!

The Activity Club went on their annual camping trip this weekend to Hells Gate State Park. In the trip they hiked, cooked over a fire, learned camping safety, leave no trace principles, and took a dip in the lake. It was a great time. Thank you to Mrs. Warwick and Mr. Strong for leading the club and the trip. #NighthawkProud
